NEY
HAKKINDA RİVAYET
Nay is a very
old east origin instrument. History of nay is not certain but there
are stories about it. Charles Fonton explain us history of nay in
his book; “Feriduddin Attar, writer of lots of great books, connects
invention of nay with the time of Prophet Mohammed in his book
“Mantıku’l- Tayr”. According to Feriduddin, one day prophet Mohammed
told a secret to his son-in-law, Ali, near a well. After the prophet
left, Ali bended down and repeated the secret to inside the well.
Then, Allah created an extremely long reed inside that well. A
shepherd, who saw that reed cut top of it and made a flute (NAY) for
himself. After some time, the shepherd met the Prophet and played
him his flute. Prophet heard the secret which he had told to Ali
from the nay while everybody was hearing music. When Ali realized
that great miracle, he became more grateful to God because of his
own love and faithfulness to the Prophet.
Muslims show great respect to reed since
that time. They may be still thinking that, Nay is repeating sacred
words of Prophet Mohammed. Because of all these thoughts nay has
religious, mystic and ethical features. Masnawi of Jalaladdin is
completely about this subject. Dervishes who pray while whirling
believe that book which is written by their master is very
special.”(1987, p. 80)
